The council says it is enacting “due process” to deal with an incursion in Horley by travellers.
Surrey Police and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council were made aware of the unauthorised encampment on Saturday (June 2) after around 10 caravans parked up at the Central Car Park in the High Street.
Councillor for Horley Central , Andrew Lynch, said: “I think they arrived Saturday night which is when we first heard about it. There were 10 in there [on Sunday].
“They’ve moved into the car park and it’s inconvenient but as usual the due process will take place and they’ll be moved on once that’s taken place.
“The joint enforcement team and the portfolio holder were aware and police were on site. Sometimes they just move off anyway of their own accord.”
Cllr James Durrant, portfolio holder for licensing and enforcement, said: “We take incursions seriously and, as you can imagine, in order to deal with them we have to follow a well-defined legal process, which our officers are currently doing. This process normally involves going to the courts.”
